1. The Egg Cafe

The Egg Cafe has been around since I became a vegetarian in the 1980s and carved its own distinct niche in what was once a very niche cuisine.

Their cheese on toast with salad is one of my go-to meals, and it can now be made vegan too.

Try some of their cakes and soak up the bohemian atmosphere. Please note there are quite a few stairs as it is on the top floor, but if you are able to manage them, do not let that put you off.

2. The Vibe Cafe

I stumbled across this place a while back and could not believe my luck. It is fully vegan, with really interesting and delicious options, plus great coffee.

There is a genuinely warm vibe, as the name promises. The staff are friendly and go above and beyond to accommodate your needs. It is a family-run independent business right in the heart of the city, easily accessible and with no stairs, making it great for wheelchairs and prams.

3. Outpost

While cycling around Liverpool, I passed this place and ventured inside.

The greeting from Matt and Harry was like meeting old friends, who they have very much now become. I sat down for a beer, they usually have imperial stouts in the fridge, and then noticed the menu.

Names like Hong Kong Chewy and The Hot One immediately caught my eye. They serve fantastic pizzas alongside brilliant local beers.

If you like your music with a heavier edge, punk, rock or metal, you will love this place.

4. Guac ‘n’ Roll Vegan Kitchen

I have followed the journey of this place for a while. They began as a pop-up and have grown into their own vegetarian restaurant that also hosts punk gigs.

Their hard work and tenacity are impressive, but it is the food that really stands out. Expect comfort classics like hot dogs and burgers, all plant based.

On Sundays, they often serve a vegan roast dinner, which is definitely worth trying. They also offer a gluten-free menu.

5. Sanskruti

I love Indian food and usually go for the hotter options. When I first tried Sanskruti, I was blown away by the choice and flavour.

I think I have now tried almost every dish on the menu and can confidently recommend them all. If you only order one thing, make it the peshwari naan. It is exceptional.

6. Down the Hatch & Woo Tan Scran

One of the many beauties of cycling is spotting somewhere interesting and popping in.

That is exactly how I found Down the Hatch. The welcome was warm and the food was outstanding.

With Dan Woo now involved, the menu has been elevated even further. One of our favourites is the Sunday roast.

7. Bundobust

I first visited Bundobust with my daughter Olivia and her partner Jim to celebrate the launch of their business, Clay Workshop.

The food was incredible. The staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations, and the beers are brewed in house.

Bold Street is already packed with brilliant food options, but Bundobust definitely enhances it. It is perfect for walk-ins and larger groups.

8. Maray

Years ago I received a gift voucher for Maray and finally had the perfect excuse to try their vegetarian options.

The first dish I noticed was Disco Cauliflower. A whole baked cauliflower drizzled with harissa, natural yoghurt, flaked almonds and chermoula. It is absolutely outstanding.

If you try only one vegetarian dish in Liverpool, make it this one. I have even written a song about it.

9. Mowgli

Visitors often ask me where to go for Indian food, and I always recommend Mowgli.

Created by TV chef Nisha Katona, Mowgli serves exceptional Indian street food with a huge range of vegetarian options. If you have never tried them, order the chat bombs.

You can visit the cosy Bold Street branch or book a table at the Water Street location.

10. Fat Hippo

Fat Hippo is perfect if you are dining with meat eaters. There is plenty on offer for everyone.

I think I have tried every vegan burger on the menu, and every one has been excellent. If guests ask for vegetarian recommendations, I always say you cannot go wrong on Bold Street. There is world cuisine on one street.
