Day Trip To Liverpool - The Best Things To Do

Firstly, thank you for considering a day trip to Liverpool! It really is one of, if not the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom. We have a wealth of history and culture here and some amazing architecture too.

If you only have the time for a day trip to Liverpool you’ll soon realise that it just simply isn’t enough time. There is FAR more to see than you have time for so here are a few recommendations from us.

But we want you to have the best time possible, so we've put together this guide to help you plan your perfect day trip to Liverpool.

What To Do On A Day Trip To Liverpool

If you’ve arrived by train at Lime Street station (the oldest intercity railway line in the world, opened in 1830!) then our city awaits you as you are in a perfect place to go out and explore.

Here are some of our top tips on what to do on your Liverpool day trip.

Explore The City On A Cycle Tour

If you want to see lots of the city in a short space of time, then we recommend a bicycle tour. This way, you can cover a large amount of ground in a short space of time and you won't be too tired afterwards!

We recommend checking out one of our city centre highlights cycling tours which covers the main landmarks of the entire city in 90 minutes, such as the iconic St George's Hall.

We cover all the “must see” places and give you a 5 minute look inside both the Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral (when open to the public) and tell you about the history of this amazing city.

You’ll also see there are lots of bars, café and restaurants, most of which are independent and will welcome you with open arms.

It’s a very welcoming place and scousers are amongst some of the friendliest people you’ll ever have the privilege to meet.

We are proud of our city and love showing visitors around and will always go above and beyond when it comes to making sure we look after you.

Sample The Food And Drink

One thing Liverpool has a big reputation for it its food and drink scene.

If you decide to book on our bicycle tour, you'll finish up next to the brilliant Black Lodge Brewery who brew their own delicious beers on site!

A great place next the station is one of our favourite traditional pubs, The Crown Hotel.

There are at least four others that we'd recommend too, which are Hobo Kiosk run by Delia and Tristan (and just around the corner from our base), Baltic Fleet (also just around the corner from our base on Kings Dock Street), Ye Cracke on Rice Street (and a Beatles connection inside) and lastly a wonderful award winning pub run by Dominic which has incredible history (it's an old jailhouse) and a lovely outside seating area, The Bridewell.

We also run a Walking Pub Crawl tour every evening so if you’d like to see some of the bars mentioned above, why not join us as it’s a great way to see more and is also ideal if you’re a solo traveller!

Explore The History Of The Beatles

After some liquid refreshment we recommend visiting the following places to fill up your day before you head back home. If you’re a fan of The Beatles then there are two places you should definitely visit (after maybe booking on our Beatles Tour first!)

First up, the Liverpool Beatles Museum on Mathew Street run by Roag Best (brother of Pete Best the original drummer with The Beatles) is a great spot. This is one of our favourites and you could easily spend a couple of hours here.

Whilst you’re on Mathew Street why not go an visit one of the most famous clubs in the world, The Cavern Club. The second is The Beatles Story in the Royal Albert Dock. This gives the history of the band and is a great tourist attraction.

Check Out The Royal Albert Dock

If you’ve ended up at the Royal Albert Dock then why not pop over to the Maritime Museum where you can learn all about how Liverpool has been an important port over the years. Whilst there don’t forget to visit the International Slavery Museum which will shed more light on how important the port of Liverpool was during these terrible times.

There are lots of shops, bars and restaurants in the Royal Albert Dock too so maybe grab some food or a beer in one of them (or more!). One of our favourite restaurants there is Maray. The “Disco Cauliflower” is a must try!

Check Out The Three Graces

At the Pier Head you will see the Three Graces (also a stop on our highlights tour) and the wonderful sculptures of The Beatles by Andrew Edwards donated to the city by The Cavern Club.

Just a short walk away is a hidden gem and my favourite museum in Liverpool, Western Approaches! This really is a fascinating museum and also on our highlights tour.

Explore The Culture Quarter

From there, walk along Castle Street to the site of Liverpool Castle and then turn left to head back along the pedestrianised shopping strand of Church Street. Head to the Cultural Quarter where you will find some amazing buildings and museums such as the Walker Art Gallery, Central Library, World Museum and St Georges Hall!
